I grew up with Ron.  He liked to play pranks and always had a mischevious smile on his face.  He used to chase me on the playground till he caught me and kissed me.  I am sorry to hear of his passing.  I'm sure the world is a lot less fun without him.

Gary and I met when we were 11 years old, we remained very close friends until his death.  We walked together at Graduation and I will always treasure our friendship he was such a kind and loving soul.  I still miss him, he is always in my thoughts.

Dear Gary,
I remember when we met in 7th grade we became friends & then we went "steady" as they called it then."I was your girl". I loved the pearl ring you gave me that day.  You know you were  my first real love! I remember you would walk to my house to see me. I couldn't wait to meet you in the mornings as we met halfway & walked together to Redford Union High School. Then you then got your first car, a Pontiac Lemans we were so excited then.  I will tell you again through tears I am so sorry I had to move. We only had the 10th. grade together in HS, then sadly as you remember I had to move to Virginia.
I was heart broken!  We kept in contact for awhile by calling & writing letters to one another then the distance seem to grow further & further.. You will always be in my heart &  mind as my first love & I thought then & still yet that you are the most handsome guy around. I will always love you!  Love, Elly

Sadly Monday morning I got a call from Joe Garber's' sister, Betty, to let me know of Joe's passing. We sat in my office talking about how Joe touched so many people with his crazy sense of humor and how good looking he was with his beautiful blonde hair. Joe was an amazing friend and a long standing client of mine. We spent many hours together over the years sitting in my office reminiscing the many fond memories of all the wonderful friends from school. I will miss him deeply and his caring, thoughtfulness to always bring me chocolate candy. My prayers to his loving sister, Betty, who has been Joe's guardian angel and his family.

I was so infatuated with him, and yes  I was also attracted to his blonde hair and such a wonderful sense of humor. Many fun memories of us would come and go during a life time and wondered what ever became of the boy that captured my heart.

Donald Juan GARCIA

1952 - February 1st, 1974

In recent email messages discussing Juan's death with his sister Donna, she told me that there was a lot about her brothers life that people outside their family will never know. So here’s the reason I’ve never forgotten him, that she didn't even know.
Most of you either didn’t know, or have undoubtedly forgotten, that at one time I had a speech problem that made me sound like I was drunk when I talked, so I didn’t talk much. On a couple occasions at Pearson Jr. High, when some kids were making fun of the way I talked, Juan heard what they were doing and made them stop. I will forever be grateful to him for that.

I recently connected to a man I knew back then that told me of Juan's death, I am very sorry to hear about his suicide. I just wanted to say that remember Juan back then as the most dreamy guy and one that was very friendly and smiling to everyone, he has always/ and still is in my memory to this day.....I was not a poplar girl but he always made me feel special as he did others. God have mercy.  I do hope some family will read this and no that Juan is thought of in a special memory. If they would care to write: micheles.curran@sympatico.ca

I knew Juan throughout my time at Pearson and Redford Union.  I believe that Juan and I had a mutual respect for each other although we didn't always agree on things.

The loss of human life is a tragedy, regardless of the circumstances.  His family had to endure his loss and live off their memories of him.

Obituary

Ernie Harwell: Gone now, but never forgotten
BY MITCH ALBOM
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST
The Voice of Summer died in the spring, shortly before the Tigers' first pitch of the evening. That was fitting. Ernie Harwell would never want to interrupt the game.

Gone now. Like the home run that lands in the seats, like the final out of the ninth inning, like the thousands of games he closed with his signature sign-offs, his genteel voice telling us he'd see us tomorrow. Gone now. No more tomorrows. At 92, after a battle with bile duct cancer that stretched into extra innings, Ernie let go of this world and moved on to the higher place to which we are certain he was sent.

Gone now. We knew this was coming. Ernie, in his final grace, prepared us for it. He told us not to worry. We still worried. He told us not to cry. We cried anyhow. He told us he had led the life he'd wanted, that he was ready to say good-bye.
But we were not.
"I know into whose arms I'm gonna fall," he told me in one of our last conversations, on a wide stage in front of a sold-out Fox Theatre, a last, packed-house tribute to a man who became arguably the most popular figure in the history of our state simply by doing the same gentle thing over and over, simply by being there, by remaining consistent, pure, good and true, even as things around him became anything but. Ernie stood out because he stood still. He was reliable as a rock. A soul in a void. A heart in a sometimes heartless world.
As long as there was Ernie, there was still a piece of childhood, of summers gone by, a piece of what baseball was supposed to be about, a pastime, a joyous diversion, youth -- good, sweet, innocent youth. Even after he stopped broadcasting nearly eight years ago, just knowing he was here, seeing him on occasion at the stadium, his hands dug in his back pockets, that wide grin beneath a funny beret, made us feel that things were still OK in baseball, because the Voice of Summer was still around, watching over the game.
Gone now.

We all have some memories of our lives and experiences in high school.  Paul will forever be enmeshed in the fabric of my high school days.  His sense of humor and mischievous antics still give me reason to laugh when I reflect on them.  I am sure he 'lives on' in other classmate memories as he does in mine.

From Ric Larson on August 22nd, 2010
Paul was one of the nice guys in my classes at Pearson - He was a great athlete and an excellent musician - He had a quirky sense of humor like me and I remember cracking him up in class and outside of school many times - The last time I saw Paul was 1970, but I never forgot him -

I included a shot of Paul with his group "Truth" for the poster I designed for the RU 1970 40th Anniversary bash at Lola Valley this past July (2010).  The photo is a lasting memory I have of Paul playing at Pearson canteens in those innocent years when boys lined up on one side and girls on the other, each of us either too shy or too embarrassed, or both, to dance with each other (speaking for myself), but all of us digging the tunes (Like The Rationals' "Respect" 1966) that Paul and "Truth" were performing for us - You were a good man Paul and I miss you.

From Valerie (McCarter) Chapman on July 6th, 2013
Pauly (as I knew him) was my first friend growing up. We lived 4 houses apart and played together often.  My earliest  memory of him was at age 4, we were trying to reach the neighbors dog over a fence  and he slipped and fell in the dog yard, well most of him did. His courderoy pants got hung up on the fence and he was face down, half out of his britches and the dog was licking his face. He was terrified and screaming. I ran to his house to get his  mother and he was rescued with no harm done, except to his sense of security. :)   We spent a lot of time at each other's houses through the grade school years, our families knew each other well.  We drifted apart after that but occasionally chatted.   I will always remember him fondly, my first buddy.

Obituary

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP)  George Kell, a Hall of Fame third baseman who outdueled Ted Williams for the 1949 American League batting title and became a Detroit Tigers broadcaster for nearly 40 years, died Tuesday. He was 86

Jackson's Funeral Home in Newport, Ark., confirmed the death but did not give a cause. The Hall of Fame said he died in his sleep at his home in Swifton, Ark. Kell was severely injured in a car crash in 2004 but was able to walk with a cane about six months later.

Kell edged Williams for the 1949 batting crown, hitting .34291 while the Boston Red Sox great finished at .34276. Kell played 15 seasons in the AL, hitting more than .300 nine times and compiling a career average of .306. He was a 10-time All-Star.

Kell played from 1943-1957 with the Philadelphia Athletics, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. He batted more than .300 each year from 1946-53. He played for the Tigers during his batting duel with Williams.

After he retired, Kell broadcast Tigers games from 1959 to 1996. Longtime Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell and Kell became close friends while working together in TV and on radio.

"He had a very laid-back style," Harwell told WWJ-AM in Detroit on Tuesday. "He was easygoing and an expert on the game. He brought the field to the booth because he played and played well. He had a conversational style that people took to."

Kell grew up in Swifton and lived in the same house from his birth to when it burned down in 2001, then was rebuilt on the same land.

From Dorthy (Polk) Diephouse on April 30th, 2011
Linda should be remembered with great love, as she was so full of love and kindness.  She was a true believer that if you shared love, it would return to you.  I was fortunate to have her as my best friend in high school, and gleaned much wisdom from her friendship.  I also was fortunate to be with her right up to the end of her life, and she never ceased to amaze me during her entire journey.  I miss her, but I carry her in my heart.

From Mark Schmittling on May 19th, 2011

Everytime I drive down Beech Daly in Redford, the thought of Linda Sue blocks everything out of my mind. The memory of her death 35 years ago is so much a part of my life.  Even today May 19 2011 the vision of that very beautiful girl with her gentle voice, with the music of her eye--she stands as clearly in front of me as in 1976, just before her death.

I loved you Linda Sue.  I truly loved you, loved you, loved you so much.  Even after a happy marriage and watching my children grow, you are still so much a part of my heart. I can never say it enough: I loved you! And I do miss you.

Your dearest friend Mark

I just found out today that Jeanne had passed and it was a huge shock. I knew her fairly well at PJH and RU. She was always a lot of fun to be around and had a great sense of humor.
When I was planning the Bahama's cruise she surprised me by calling one night and asking if it was too late to get in on the fun. It was a real shock to hear her voice after all those years but she sounded just like I remembered so I knew it was her instantly. I'm so glad she went with us because as usual she was the life of the party.
She wanted badly to go on the planned Alaska cruise for this summer that never happened so I was hoping to see her on the one I'm planning for Summer of 2015. I (we) will miss her smiling face and contagious laughter on that cruise.
Goodbye for now Jeanne, we will never forget you.

From Shirley Howe Street on September 14th, 2012
Image Those of us who went on the Bahama Cruise were fortunate enough to reconnect with sweet little Jeanne (Beanie).  I never saw her without a smile.  She was gracious, beautiful and kind.  My heart is broken.

I haven't seem Mary since graduation, but in and since 2009 when I was trying to set up our 40 year reunion cruise, she started sending me messages of encouragement whenever things loooked like they were going south on the project. I also remember encouraging her when a fellow classmate whom she tried to help turned on her and was posting some nasty things about Mary. We've been good online friends ever since. I'm so sorry to learn that she lost her fight against Cancer today, before I could get back there and meet up with her in person, just once, to thank her for all her help. I will miss her deeply.

On a personal note, I knew Bob beginning at Pearson Jr. High. He was a pretty good guy most of the time and even though we had our disagreements at times I liked him a lot because you always knew where you stood with him. If you were one of his friends you could usually count on him to be there for you in a heartbeat.

From Mark Beausoleil on July 17th, 2010
I met Bob in 6th grade at Stuckey. We made devils night every night from that point on. We had a ball. We experienced a lot of firsts. Like using the always illusive, "Dine and  Dash" card at area eateries. Mama Mias Pizzaria, for one.  We would stop by Larry Parks house, a few doors down from Bob's, and go down to his psychedelic "black light" room in his parents basement and enjoyed our first joint.  It was far-out man. What a shame about both of them. 2 great guys, gone way too soon.   Mark B

Soupy Milton Supman (Sales)

1926 - October 22nd, 2009

Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian who made an art form out of taking a pie in the face and delighted a generation of Detroiters with his loopy TV show on Channel 7 in the 1950s, died Thursday night in New York.
Sales, who had been in ill health for several years, was 83. His former manager, Dave Usher, said Sales last week entered a Bronx hospice, where he died. He is survived by his wife, Trudy, and two sons, Hunt and Tony.

“He was the first person from Detroit television whose first name had instant recognition from coast to coast,” said former Channel 7 anchorman Bill Bonds. “If you said ‘Soupy' in New York, they knew who it was. If you said ‘Soupy' in Los Angeles, everybody knew who it was. I'd worked in both markets, and the first thing anybody said when I mentioned I was from Detroit was ‘Soupy.' ”

Born Milton Supman in Franklinton, N.C., and raised in West Virginia, Sales was best known to Detroiters as the goofy yet cerebral host of “Lunch with Soupy,” a half-hour show that featured Sales hamming it up in a variety of sometimes surreal situations.

The show, which began airing in Detroit in 1953, featured a cast of unforgettable characters: an incorrigible dog by the name of White Fang, “the meanest dog in all Deeeetroit,” who communicated via a series of guttural noises; Black Tooth, an overly affectionate dog whom Sales would constantly tell “don't kiss”; Hippy the Hippo, and Willy the Worm.

I used to live in Redford Twn. and then in the late 60's our family moved to Canada. I want to say that Soupy Sales is the most fondest memory of my childhood tv days. He was the ultimate !!!  I can remember when he'd swallow a "one-a-day" (I think) vitamin and it would explode in his stomach. Then there was the elephant outside the door that would spray him and the many pies in the face and of course the Best, white fang and black tooth.....wow....those memories you cannot forget and also he'd carry the Wonderbread through the studio. I wish I could watch him to this day....I loved him as a child, God bless his memory and his remaining family.

They were kind and sweet as well as her two brothers dick and dennise who died prior to judy. I always admired judy and sharon flarartiy they were the best of friends and ever so cool. They were a few yrs older than I. Later when i was an adult Judy and I became very very good friends  when I sold her home on Brady in Redford Twsp. She was a single mom back when it was really really hard fro a woman to raise her children alone. She loved thoes kids more than anything in the whole world. She never had a bad word to say about any one ever ever ever. If i had to sum her up into one word  it would be she was a  class act. I spoke to her after she had found me on the computer  several yrs ago.She lived in Gaylord and i had been trying to find her for many yrs since . I found this today july fourth 2013 and am so saddened to hear of her passing. I will miss her alot, I have gone twice to Gaylord and tried to find her. Sadly, like all other Detroit landmarks that ceased to be used, Olympia Stadium, Hudson's Downtown store, and the Vernor's plant, the city of Detroit couldn't get it torn down fast enough to make room for another parking lot that's never used. Last I heard the Silverdome is still standing, but it doesn't really have any historic value, and it's not in Detroit.

Linda Oberstadt died in Arizona in 1991. She was 39 years old.
I did her eulogy in AZ for her parents which was very hard on me, because there were only three people inside a huge church filled with people (about 300) that did not know her at all.
At the end as people paid their respects and said their goodbyes they all had tears in their eyes and said they felt they knew her.  That's when I knew I gave my best friend justice.

Larry and I became fast friends early on back at Stuckey School.  He inspired me on my hitch hiking adventures and later on I visited him when he was living in San Francisco's upper Height district.  He was always the kind of friend that even after years of no communication we would just pick up where we left off.  About a year before he passed I went to Lansing where he worked making prothesis and we spent a day kayaking in the city.  He was not only a great friend but great person.  I miss him often.

Tribute

From Charlie Stewart on August 7th, 2013
Until our 40 year reunion cruise to the Bahama's in 2010 I hadn't seen or heard from Sally since graduation. It was great to see her again. If she had any clue that she was so sick she never once gave it away.  She just joined the rest of us in partying like it had only been a few days since we'd last seen each other, and a FANTASTIC time was had by all.

I was so hoping she would join us on the 2015 cruise to Alaska, but God had other plans for her (I know she'll be watching over us from Heaven) and called her home. Alas, she'll be with us in spirit and we will toast her and our memories of the good times we all had as kids in high school and (for a few) well beyond.

From Sean Burke on December 25th, 2013
My first memory of Sally Jo Taylor is from September, 1966 when Suzanne Talbot and I, fresh out of Our Lady or Loretto, transferred to Lolla Valley Junior High in 9th grade. Tom Sheehan asked me if I'd like to go to a party at Sally Taylor's house. He told me that Sally was the most popular girl in 9th grade. He rode his bike over to pick me up. But I was surprised when I met Sally. She wasn't the beautiful bombshell I was expecting. She did have GREAT hair though; it could keep a flip like none other! Over the next few months when I got to know her, I saw that it was her personality that won everyone over. She was funny, vibrant and compassionate. She inspired me in so many ways. Not only did I first meet Sally that night, it was also my first boy/girl party, AND my first kiss. (If anyone knows Tom Sheehan, thank him for that first kiss!) And thank you, Sally, for being my friend. Her last words to me were PEACE OUT and she will always hold a very special place in my heart. Rest in peace Sally Jo.

LINDA WESTERCAMP (FERGUSON)

Obituary

Linda graduated in 1970. I introduced her to my brother Al who just joined her in heaven. Linda loved Jesus and knew him personally. She even told me before her death He spoke to her. She died of Breast Cancer in her thirties. At the time she had five children. Dawn and Jason were her own, and Sherri, Todd and Lisa were her Step kids. You would not know the difference how she treated them. They loved her dearly and she made a huge impact on their lives. She was an amazing woman and dear friend and sister in law. Her sister Julie passed away of Breast Cancer just out of high school before Linda’s passing. I do have a favor from anyone who remembers Linda at all.
Her daughter Dawn can hardly remember her and would love to know about her mom. She was only six when Linda passed away and would love to hear from anyone who knew her mom, anyone at all who could tell her anything about her mom. Dawn is so much like her mom. She has a wonderful sense of humor as her mom did.
I remember when Linda and I were in speech class and we would talk and laugh, and every time, I would get kicked out of class because Linda would have me in stitches. Out into the hall I would go and she would sit nice and sweet in her seat. She worked in the office and we skipped school since we never had, ever, and wanted to just once.
Well, we went to Taylor’s (Party Store) and bought those little Hot Dog Sausages and split them. There was an extra one left. I told her she could have it, and she told me I could have it. Well, she went back to the office to work and I stuck the sausage on the front of the desk for her while she was waiting on someone. She was so very embarrassed. She was like that, kind of shy in front of strangers. LOL! I thought it was so very funny, she did not.
She wanted grandkids, even before her kids were five she was talking about them. She now has 8 grand kids she has never met. I look at them and just think how she wanted them so, and how proud she would be of them. Her daughter has recently gotten to know Jesus and had a dream of her mom for the first time in her life. I think it was a true visit from heaven. Her son Jason and daughter Lisa work as Homeland Security officers. Her daughter Sheri has the kindest heart in the whole world. And her son and daughter in law Bertha and Todd Ferguson own Sorella Bakery on Five Mile and Merriman in Livonia. They have won the Knott three years in a row and are the bakery exclusively for the Whitney Restaurant in Detroit.
My brother loved her so much. She married a man with three children, something not too many women would do. I miss her daily. I think of her and her unselfish kindness . She would take my daughter on vacation with her to Niagara Falls. Who does this? She also threw my daughter her one and only birthday party. She was that kind of an aunt too, amazing. Her favorite song was Amazing Grace. She has a brother Chris and a sister Vicky whom I still stay in touch with on my Facebook if anyone is looking for them.
